Light a Candle
On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, Joan M. Nichols of Redondo Beach, California, passed away of natural causes. She was 82 years old.
Born Joan Margaret Wilmer, on September 23, 1930 to John and Margaret Wilmer of Philadelphia, PA, Joan spent more than 50 years in the Restaurant Food Service Industry as a server, hostess and manager at numerous establishments on the east and west coasts. Joan was a fixture at the iconic Zaberer's Restaurant in the beach town, Wildwood, New Jersey. If you visited the restaurant in the 60's, you no doubt were served by her.
Joan made a permanent move to Burbank, California in 1969 and became a fixture at the World Famous Copper Penny Restaurant which was located across the street from the Burbank Warner Brothers Studios lot where she counted numerous Hollywood legends and movie and television film makers as customers and friends.
When she wasn't working, Joan enjoyed reading, sewing and the arts. She was also a master "gift wrapper" and often was asked by friends to creatively wrap gifts for their loved ones. She was a fan of film and theater and loved to see staged plays, comedies and musicals with friends and family. She loved to dance and socialize and had a great sense of humor.
In her mid-70's, Joan retired to Redondo Beach, California where she continued to spend time and go on outings with her years-long coterie as well as the new friends that she made at her home, Casa de Los Amigos, right up until her passing.
Those that knew her will forever remember her radiant smile and infectious laugh. Joan was the widow of Earl Nichols and is survived by sister, Mary Boccella, brother Jack Wilmer, daughters Joanne Jakeman and Patricia Covell, son Jon Nichols, grand daughter, Annie Covell and scores of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
